JMI Presents The Baxter Birrell Trio

Every second Saturday night, we welcome the student trios from JMI—the Jazz Music Institute. They’ll take you through tunes from traditional jazz and swing, to bebop and beyond. These are Brisbane’s finest emerging talents, sure to get your toes tapping. Entry is free, no booking needed, but if you enjoy the show, feel free to tip the musicians. Tasty bites are available, and the bar features local and international wines, classic cocktails, fine spirits, and a deep bourbon collection worthy of New Orleans.

As an up-and-coming jazz pianist and lover of all things abstract, Baxter Birrell seeks to imbue his music with the type of emotion that can only be captured by the medium. This search has led him to blend a myriad of avante-guarde styles into his approach to playing within the jazz idiom. As a result, his music presents a fascinating dichotomy between frenetic action and considered instrospection.
